Voltaire and the other Enlightenment PhilosophersVoltaire was alive during the Enlightenment, but it could be said that his contribution was minimal. His failure to procure an original philosophy was thought to be counterbalanced by his unrelenting cultivation of the philosophy of action. Voltaire’s “common sense” crusade was in favor of religious toleration, against superstition and prejudice, and was perhaps his single greatest contribution to the progress of the Enlightenment.
